Sexting — sharing sexually explicit photos, videos and chat by cell phone or online — is fairly commonplace among young people, despite sometimes grim consequences for those who do it. More than a quarter of young people have been involved in sexting in some form, an Associated Press-MTV poll found.
That includes Sammy, a 16-year-old from the San Francisco Bay Area who asked that his last name not be used.
Sammy said he had shared naked pictures of himself with girlfriends. He also shared naked pictures of someone else that a friend had sent him.

What he didn't realize at the time was that young people across the country — in Florida, Indiana, Ohio and Pennsylvania — have faced charges, in some cases felony charges, for sending nude pictures.

Sending nude pictures a felony. Wow, not my cup of tea, but it seems some people have issues with nudity. On the other hand, you can go to public beaches in FL were you can be naked all day long and it's legal. I don't get it.

The reason it is illegal is because once a nude (or worse) picture or video is taken of a minor it is child porn, even if that child is a willing participant or even the author. Then it is sent using a phone or computer it becomes a federal crime for the distribution of child pornography. And yes, there are more devastating stories of teenagers or even pre-teens committing suicide because of it. However it's impossible to punish someone for committing suicide so the law is focused on preventing it. For the record, suicide is still illegal.

And three months ago, 13-year-old Hope Witsell hanged herself, after relentless taunting at her school near Tampa, Fla. She had sent a nude photo of herself to a boy she liked, and another girl used his phone to send the picture to other students who forwarded it along. The St. Petersburg Times first reported on Hope's death this week

Maybe this is the reason they made it a felony.

Man! My daughter just turned 13 today and she spends a bit of time on her mobile. However I don't think she's that clued up when it comes to boys. I'll give you an example..She's at the shopping mall with her friend Cathrine. A young boy tells Cathrine that he likes her friend and he'd like to get her number(Faith at this point is standing 200 yards away:)..Cathrine tells the guy she'lll tell my daughter. When Cathrine walks up to her and tells her the guy likes her. The first thing my daugther does is giggle-giggle and runs of with Cathrine linking arms.

I'm sure I have any reason to worry...Now where's her mobile phone?
